30 Days of Podcast Notes Day 1: Start Sloppy

September 30th is International Podcast Day, so I'm releasing one voice note a day in the run-up to it — a tip or a reflection from about 15 years in podcasting. I'm starting with the one that made this series possible: start sloppy. My first show, the TIL Podcast, had no format, no moderation, and no editing, and I still learned more from making it than I would have from planning it. You don't need to launch perfectly. You need to launch.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:04 Hello and welcome to a new short series I'm doing
00:00:04 --> 00:00:07 on the Streamline podcaster called 30 Days of
00:00:07 --> 00:00:11 Podcast Notes. September 30th is International
00:00:11 --> 00:00:15 Podcast Day and I thought for the days leading
00:00:15 --> 00:00:19 up to September 30th, I would release one voice
00:00:19 --> 00:00:23 note per day with a tip or reflection about my
00:00:23 --> 00:00:26 journey in podcasting and what you can learn
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 for your own podcast workflows. and systems.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:34 Now you might be thinking this is episode one
00:00:34 --> 00:00:40 and it is hitting your feed on not the first
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 day of September and that's because I thought
00:00:42 --> 00:00:47 of this idea this morning and decided to record
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 a bunch and backdate them from September 1st
00:00:50 --> 00:00:53 so that there is one episode per day. Is that
00:00:53 --> 00:00:56 cheating? Maybe? I don't know. But it does lend
00:00:56 --> 00:01:04 itself very well to the first tip of these 30
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 days of podcast notes. And that is start sloppy.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:12 I have been in the podcasting space for around
00:01:12 --> 00:01:17 15 years now. I started listening in 09 or 10
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 and I decided shortly after that I wanted to
00:01:21 --> 00:01:24 start a podcast. That finally came to fruition.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:27 when I was out at the bar with my friends and
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 we would have these regular discussions about
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 things where it became shockingly apparent that
00:01:34 --> 00:01:39 I had a hole in my general knowledge of things
00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 and so we thought that we should record these
00:01:41 --> 00:01:47 episodes and we called it TIL podcast and we
00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 didn't have much of a format. One of us would
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 come across an article and we would talk about
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 it. There were like eight of us, usually five
00:01:55 --> 00:01:59 of us would be on the show and we didn't, there
00:01:59 --> 00:02:02 was no moderation. I didn't really edit anything.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:05 We would just record these episodes over Skype
00:02:05 --> 00:02:11 and then release them. And while it didn't go
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 anywhere, I learned a lot, but the important
00:02:14 --> 00:02:20 thing was that we started sloppy. So we started
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 recording, we got the experience and you can
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 always get better. And that's really the point
00:02:24 --> 00:02:30 of this voice note. Start sloppy, especially
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 today, right? We don't need to launch perfectly.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:36 We just need to launch. And it was true then
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 and it's true now, and it will be true in the
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 future. So that's it for this voice note number
00:02:42 --> 00:02:47 one. Start sloppy. Now... I encourage you to
00:02:47 --> 00:02:50 subscribe to this show. You can also join my
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 mailing list over at streamlined .fm slash join
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 if you are a solo business owner who is looking
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 to improve their content process. But I do want
00:02:58 --> 00:03:02 to clear up one more thing. And that is I'm calling
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 it 30 days of podcast notes. I intend to record
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 for 30 days. So I will actually I'm recording
00:03:08 --> 00:03:11 this on September 7th. I will record until October
00:03:11 --> 00:03:15 7th. So you're actually getting 37 episodes.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 Those last seven will be a reflection on this
00:03:18 --> 00:03:23 series. So again, I decided to start sloppy here.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 That's it for this episode of the Streamlined
00:03:25 --> 00:03:31 Podcaster. Tune in tomorrow for another podcast
00:03:31 --> 00:03:31 note.
