Going on ShopTalk Show with Chris Coyier and Dave Rupert around 2013 changed how I made podcasts. They had a guest notes page explaining how to get the best possible recording, and they had guests record their side locally so the finished episode sounded like everyone was in the same room — years before Riverside, Zencastr, or SquadCast existed. 00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 better at podcasting. And today's tip is learn
00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 from others. For the last seven episodes, I was
00:00:35 --> 00:00:37 kind of reflecting on my very first podcast,
00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 but I had what I guess I'll call a pivotal moment
00:00:41 --> 00:00:47 when I went on Shop Talk Show with Chris Coyer
00:00:47 --> 00:00:51 and Dave Rupert. And it was pivotal not only
00:00:51 --> 00:00:53 because I looked up to those guys and it was
00:00:53 --> 00:00:55 a huge show in our field. I used to be a web
00:00:55 --> 00:00:59 developer and I was launching a new book. called
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 responsive design with wordpress and it was really
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 cool that they would even have me on the show
00:01:04 --> 00:01:11 but i also learned a bunch about podcasting i
00:01:11 --> 00:01:16 learned from them that they had a guest notes
00:01:16 --> 00:01:18 page on their website on how to get the best
00:01:18 --> 00:01:22 possible recording i learned that they had their
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 guests record their side of the audio locally.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 So they would still record with Ecamm call recorder
00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 or whatever we used at the time, but they would
00:01:31 --> 00:01:36 get local versions of all of the audio so that
00:01:36 --> 00:01:38 it sounded like they were in the same room. And
00:01:38 --> 00:01:46 in 2013, 2014, whenever this was, that was massive
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 because platforms like Zencaster and Riverside
00:01:50 --> 00:01:55 and Squadcast didn't exist yet. I'm mentioning
00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 this here because over the next few days I'll
00:01:57 --> 00:02:06 talk about launching my most popular show and
00:02:06 --> 00:02:08 I am fully confident that the lessons I learned
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 from Shop Talk Show are what helped make the
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 show popular. Yes, that show served the audience
00:02:15 --> 00:02:21 and I was very clear on it, but the quality of
00:02:21 --> 00:02:27 the audio was incredible at a time where most
00:02:27 --> 00:02:34 wasn't. So today's tip, learn from others. Spend
00:02:34 --> 00:02:40 time in the podcasting space. Spend time with
00:02:40 --> 00:02:44 your audience whom you're serving and take really
00:02:44 --> 00:02:48 good lessons and apply them. That's kind of the
00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 the reason I'm starting this show I want you
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 to learn from me in my journey Because even though
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 I've been podcasting for about 15 years near
00:02:55 --> 00:03:01 15 years a Lot of the stuff that I learned is
00:03:01 --> 00:03:06 still applicable today certainly the Relationship
00:03:06 --> 00:03:09 the human relationship side of things is and
00:03:09 --> 00:03:12 that still remains in my humble opinion the most
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 important part of podcasting so That's it for
