I bought the domain howibuilt.it on my honeymoon in Italy, purely because every site I saw there had a .it address and I wanted one. The idea arrived a few weeks later: I was relaunching my online courses, having great conversations with people about how they'd built their businesses, and realized I should be recording them. How I Built It launched in July 2016 — less sloppy, better researched, and aimed squarely at independent developers who wanted to start a business, which is to say, at me. 00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 launched their show, How I Built This, and I
00:00:39 --> 00:00:42 stubbornly kept the name for eight years because
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 the show got pretty popular pretty quickly, and
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 I'll reflect on that more. But today, I want
00:00:48 --> 00:00:51 to tell you how I came up with the idea and why
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 I decided to run with it. So, as I mentioned,
00:00:55 --> 00:00:57 I bought this domain when I was in Italy on my
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 honeymoon. We were visiting a lot of websites
00:01:01 --> 00:01:05 and they all had .IT domain names. And I wanted
00:01:05 --> 00:01:10 one. And so I saw, kind of on a whim, oh, I wonder
00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 if how I built .IT exists. And so I bought the
00:01:13 --> 00:01:18 domain without having any idea for it. Luckily,
00:01:19 --> 00:01:22 through divine providence or a stroke of genius
00:01:22 --> 00:01:24 or whatever, I came up with an idea pretty quickly
00:01:24 --> 00:01:28 because when I got back from my honeymoon, I
00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 decided I wanted to relaunch my online courses,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:36 and I wanted to do it right. So I was talking
00:01:36 --> 00:01:39 to people in my field, outside my field, about
00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 how they launched their businesses. And I thought,
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 well, these are really good conversations. I
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 should record and release them. And I was always
00:01:47 --> 00:01:52 asking, how did you build that ergo? This show
00:01:52 --> 00:01:57 was called How I Built It. So I will talk more
00:01:57 --> 00:01:59 about the format and the tools I used and all
00:01:59 --> 00:02:03 that fun stuff in future notes, but this idea
00:02:03 --> 00:02:04 was really important to me because I think it
00:02:04 --> 00:02:07 was the culmination of everything I learned from
00:02:07 --> 00:02:11 the TIL podcast. I started slightly less sloppy
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 because I got good advice from others, so I learned
00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 from others. I did more research on how to launch
00:02:16 --> 00:02:19 the show and how the show would be different.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:26 I served an audience that is independent at the
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 time. Independent WordPress developers who wanted
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 to start a business. Independent WordPress developers
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 who wanted to start a business. That was very
00:02:36 --> 00:02:42 niche. And it was me. And so I learned who I
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 was serving and I could focus the entire episode
00:02:46 --> 00:02:50 or the entire show. that so it was kind of the
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 culmination of everything I learned over the
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 past two two or three years because I didn't
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 launch the show until July 2016 and TAL podcast
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 came out by some accounts late 2012 and others
00:03:03 --> 00:03:09 in 2013 I know I was toying with podcasting for
00:03:09 --> 00:03:13 you know before that so I was excited about the
00:03:13 --> 00:03:18 show but I had no idea That it would take off
00:03:18 --> 00:03:19 and that's what I want to talk about over the
00:03:19 --> 00:03:24 next few days. So I will leave it there the Tip
00:03:24 --> 00:03:31 for you in this is log your ideas and Give them,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 you know people say that Good ideas will keep
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 coming back to me. And that's just I don't think
00:03:36 --> 00:03:40 that's true so you should think through and log
00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 them and revisit them from time to time because
00:03:43 --> 00:03:49 It had been four years If I wanted to launch
00:03:49 --> 00:03:53 a podcast in 2011 and didn't, it was four years
00:03:53 --> 00:03:57 from the time I wanted to start a podcast to
00:03:57 --> 00:04:00 really five years, I guess, to when I launched
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 one successfully. And there was a failed launch
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 in there. But I learned these lessons and I found
00:04:06 --> 00:04:09 the audience I was serving. And so I had this
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 idea and I ran with it. But logging that idea
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 was super important. because I don't think I
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 would have ran with it if I hadn't, right? If
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 I was just like, oh, it'll come back to me. No,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 I wrote it down and I thought about it. So that
