Serve an Audience [Day 7 30 Days of Podcast Notes]

The TIL Podcast failed because I wasn't serving anybody. The technical barriers are gone — you can record from your phone, and RSS.com has a free hosting tier (disclosure: I'm their evangelist, and the link below is an affiliate link) — which means serving a specific audience is now the whole job. Write a mission statement, pick someone real and specific, and talk to them. You don't need millions of downloads; you need people you serve well enough that they come back and bring others.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Hello and welcome to day seven, episode seven
00:00:06 --> 00:00:10 of this series of 30 days of podcast notes. Today
00:00:10 --> 00:00:13 I want to talk about why TIL podcast failed and
00:00:13 --> 00:00:18 I alluded to it a little bit yesterday for episode
00:00:18 --> 00:00:21 six, the reboot, but it's because I wasn't serving
00:00:21 --> 00:00:24 an audience and this is ultimately what you need
00:00:24 --> 00:00:27 to do when you launch a podcast because while
00:00:27 --> 00:00:31 the technical aspects have gotten a lot easier.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:36 You can record from your phone. I am not for
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 these first few episodes. I am at my desk, but
00:00:39 --> 00:00:44 I am traveling a lot in September. And if I want
00:00:44 --> 00:00:49 to make the daily notes work, I need both a good
00:00:49 --> 00:00:53 system and the ability to record anywhere. And
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 I feel confident recording from my phone. So
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 that may sound different, you know these these
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 later episodes if I don't pre -record a bunch
00:01:02 --> 00:01:08 but you can do that now there is free hosting
00:01:08 --> 00:01:13 with rss .com which disclosure I am the I somebody
00:01:13 --> 00:01:15 referred to me as the youtuber in residence and
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 I really liked that I'm officially the evangelist
00:01:18 --> 00:01:22 that's my title and but I'm using it for this
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 show because it's great rss .com is fantastic
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 I will have a link in the show notes It will
00:01:28 --> 00:01:32 be an affiliate link. So all the disclosures
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 are there, but they have a free like we have
00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 a free account. You don't have to pay for hosting.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:40 You can record from your phone. It's easier than
00:01:40 --> 00:01:46 ever, which means. Now more than ever, you need
00:01:46 --> 00:01:52 to focus on serving an audience. It used to be
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 the case that if you could launch a podcast.
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 If you had the technical ability to launch a
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 podcast, you'd find an audience. I'm sure that
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 if I kept TIL Podcasts going for a little longer,
00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 I would have. I would have found my audience
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 and it would have taken off, relatively speaking,
00:02:13 --> 00:02:16 because we were doing something a lot of people
00:02:16 --> 00:02:19 weren't doing. But serving the audience was the
00:02:19 --> 00:02:25 missing part. Today, it's the main thing. because
00:02:25 --> 00:02:26 there are no barriers to entry. There's very
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 little friction for starting a podcast. So how
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 do you serve an audience? You have a mission
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 statement. Why are you starting your show? Think
00:02:35 --> 00:02:38 of something or someone really specific and talk
00:02:38 --> 00:02:43 to them. Give them advice. There's a reason people
00:02:43 --> 00:02:47 say the riches are in the niches. And it's because
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 when you serve an audience, when you talk to
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 them, you don't need hundreds of thousands of
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 downloads or millions of downloads. You need
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 people you are serving well to keep coming back
00:02:58 --> 00:03:03 and to keep recommending your show. So that's
00:03:03 --> 00:03:07 today's tips. Serve an audience. That was number
00:03:07 --> 00:03:10 seven, episode seven of 30 Days of Podcast Notes.
