The Tools You Actually Need [Day 22 30 Days of Podcast Notes]

Gear is the hardware; tools are the stack. You need a host, because a podcast is something people can get anywhere — that means an RSS feed that reaches Apple, Spotify, Overcast, Pocket Casts and the rest, not just a YouTube upload. I recommend RSS.com, and the disclosure is that I'm their evangelist; the reason I'm comfortable doing that is the free plan, which has no cap on how much audio you upload. Record with QuickTime or Windows Recorder, edit in GarageBand or Audacity for nothing, or step up to transcript-based editing with Gling, Descript, or Riverside. All in, you can be publishing for under two hundred dollars a year.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:04 Hey everybody and welcome to episode 22 day 22
00:00:04 --> 00:00:09 of 30 days of podcast notes. The last two days
00:00:09 --> 00:00:11 I've talked to you about what podcasting looks
00:00:11 --> 00:00:14 like today. I am recording all of these notes
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 on the same day just so you can kind of understand
00:00:16 --> 00:00:20 how the sausage gets made. So if I'm a little
00:00:20 --> 00:00:22 bit more baritone sounding than usual it's because
00:00:22 --> 00:00:25 I am home from a conference that was fantastic
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 and I did a lot of talking. And so Today I want
00:00:28 --> 00:00:31 to talk about the tools. Yesterday I talked about
00:00:31 --> 00:00:35 the gear. So what's the difference between tools
00:00:35 --> 00:00:41 and gear? The gear is the hardware, the physical
00:00:41 --> 00:00:45 stuff that you buy, where the tools, in my opinion,
00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 are the online software things, the tech stack,
00:00:49 --> 00:00:56 if you will. And just like the gear, the tech
00:00:56 --> 00:01:00 stack has gotten a lot easier a lot more affordable
00:01:00 --> 00:01:05 and You need someplace to host your podcast.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:09 You can't just upload it to YouTube and say I
00:01:09 --> 00:01:13 have a podcast not because things on YouTube
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 are not podcasts, but because The very idea of
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 a podcast is that it's accessible anywhere Until
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 you want to have an RSS feed so that you can
00:01:23 --> 00:01:26 submit it to places like Apple Podcasts, Spotify,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 Amazon, and then all of the third -party apps
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 like Overcast and Pocket Casts and a whole bunch
00:01:32 --> 00:01:39 of others. So I recommend RSS .com. Full disclosure,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:44 I am their evangelist and YouTuber in residence,
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 but I truly believe, you know, I think if you've
00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 known me for a long time, you will know I'm very
00:01:49 --> 00:01:55 candid and I don't promote or do work with companies
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 or products I don't think are good. And I've
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 been with RSS .com for several years now. Just
00:02:02 --> 00:02:03 the work that we're doing over there, really
00:02:03 --> 00:02:05 the team is doing over there. The work I'm telling
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 people about and the actual team is doing is
00:02:09 --> 00:02:15 fantastic. And we have a free plan. Free, no
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 limits on the amount of audio you can upload
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 and things like that. The limits are around certain
00:02:20 --> 00:02:24 features. and analytics. And if you are launching
00:02:24 --> 00:02:30 a podcast, what you get for nothing is incredible.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:38 It's in my opinion, in my experience, the best
00:02:38 --> 00:02:43 free podcasting plan that has ever existed. This
00:02:43 --> 00:02:46 is not an overstatement, right? Because like
00:02:46 --> 00:02:51 Spotify for creators is free, but The difference
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 between what RSS .com offers and what Spotify
00:02:54 --> 00:02:59 for creators offers is RSS .com has paid plans.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 Our goal is to get you to use the free plan and
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 then when you outgrow the free plan, which some
00:03:07 --> 00:03:11 people never will, but if and when you outgrow
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 the free plan, we have paid plans. That's how
00:03:13 --> 00:03:18 we as a company make money. Spotify makes money
00:03:18 --> 00:03:22 off of your content. That's how it works for
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 them. And so sure, everything's going to be free
00:03:25 --> 00:03:27 and they're going to give you tools to make more
00:03:27 --> 00:03:30 content for their platform. But if they determine
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 that your content doesn't make them money and
00:03:33 --> 00:03:34 is more trouble than it's worth, they can just
00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 shut you down or decide that they don't want
00:03:37 --> 00:03:40 you there anymore. And you don't you don't you
00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 don't fully own your content. They can shut you
00:03:43 --> 00:03:47 down without warning for no reason. with services
00:03:47 --> 00:03:51 like RSS .com and our competitors, I mean, you
00:03:51 --> 00:03:54 can just take your podcast somewhere else, right?
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 And we believe in the mission of podcasting.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:03 We've been around for years. And so I love our
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 mission. I love who we stand for. And I love
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 that we have a free plan for people who are just
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 getting started. So it no longer costs you money
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 to actually start and launch your podcast. So
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 we're still at 50 bucks, right? The microphone
00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 from yesterday. As far as editing, recording
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 and editing, you can record with QuickTime. That's
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 how I'm recording these episodes or Windows recorder
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 if you're on Windows. And with editing, you can
00:04:27 --> 00:04:32 use free tools like GarageBand or Audacity, or
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 you can use a transcript based editing tool.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 I like using Gling .ai, especially for video.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:42 There's Descripts and Riverside. Those are going
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 to have some investment. Gling .ai I think is
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 110 bucks a year as I record this. Descript and
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 Riverside are closer to 15 to 30 bucks a month.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 And they have a lot more tools. The thing I like
00:04:54 --> 00:04:57 about Gling .ai is it's very focused on the transcript
00:04:57 --> 00:05:01 based editing and like adding a few like Zooms
00:05:01 --> 00:05:06 and things like that. So that's the gear. That's
00:05:06 --> 00:05:10 all the gear that you need. A way to record,
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 a way to edit. And I do generally recommend editing
00:05:13 --> 00:05:17 for brevity and clarity especially in an audio
00:05:17 --> 00:05:21 only medium and then rss .com for hosting and
00:05:21 --> 00:05:25 you know that my my my bend here is on Audio
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 only rss .com does have a video plan that does
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 cost money. It's our highest plan You are monetized
00:05:32 --> 00:05:37 instantly because we will add Dynamically inserted
00:05:37 --> 00:05:41 ads to your videos to Help you generate money
00:05:41 --> 00:05:46 because you are using Like it just generally
00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 costs more money to do video editing and so we
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 want to offset the costs for you and We want
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 to offset the cost for us too. So that that plan
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 doesn't become prohibitively expensive for people
00:05:58 --> 00:06:03 and so You're monetized right away. No You know
00:06:03 --> 00:06:08 no download or subscriber limit or or minimum
00:06:08 --> 00:06:11 so If you are doing video, if you don't want
00:06:11 --> 00:06:15 to necessarily make the investment in a video
00:06:15 --> 00:06:19 plan with RSS .com or any podcast host, you could
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 upload the audio to RSS .com and then manually
00:06:22 --> 00:06:29 upload the video to YouTube as well. So very
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 low costs still here, right? We're looking at
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 if you do the microphone and gling less than
00:06:34 --> 00:06:38 $200 a year to start your podcast. If you decide
00:06:38 --> 00:06:42 not to edit, that is a choice. I do think editing
00:06:42 --> 00:06:46 for brevity and clarity is important. I'm not
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 doing it with these because these are more like
00:06:48 --> 00:06:51 yaps and I've been very upfront about that, but
00:06:51 --> 00:06:54 every other podcast episode I make is edited
00:06:54 --> 00:06:59 for brevity and clarity. But that's it for this
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 episode. We've now covered mission gear and tools.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 Tomorrow we will answer the question, should
00:07:04 --> 00:07:08 you do video? Because I think it is a big question
