Yesterday was the rah-rah version; this is the practical side of what will always work in podcasting. Have a mission statement: I help these people with this problem by this solution, and every episode moves toward it. When I've forgotten my mission, that's when I've seen downloads dip. Sound decent, but you don't need to sound like you're in a recording booth, because people are going to want authentic as more and more feels inauthentic. And use your show not to get big and chase ad money, but to help people who have a problem. That can make a successful show, even if it isn't the biggest one.

00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Hey everybody and welcome to day 26 of the Streamline
00:00:06 --> 00:00:09 podcaster. 30 days of podcast notes on the Streamline
00:00:09 --> 00:00:12 podcaster. This is another backdated one. I want
00:00:12 --> 00:00:15 to be super clear about that. And today I want
00:00:15 --> 00:00:19 to talk about what will always work. I kind of
00:00:19 --> 00:00:21 alluded to this in yesterday's episode or really
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 in episode 25. But I want to talk about really
00:00:25 --> 00:00:31 the mechanics of it. the practical side of it,
00:00:31 --> 00:00:33 right? Yesterday was a little bit more rah -rah,
00:00:33 --> 00:00:35 where, you know, I said, oh, always serve your
00:00:35 --> 00:00:40 audience, right? So what is the future of podcasting
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 look like from a what will always work perspective?
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 Well, first, and I'm going to talk about this
00:00:45 --> 00:00:50 more in an upcoming episode, but I think smaller
00:00:50 --> 00:00:56 will be better for most people. So, you know,
00:00:56 --> 00:00:59 we... I kind of told you my history, how easily
00:00:59 --> 00:01:03 I was able to get sponsors, and how that changed
00:01:03 --> 00:01:07 pretty dramatically after the pandemic. But that
00:01:07 --> 00:01:11 doesn't mean my podcast isn't making money. In
00:01:11 --> 00:01:14 fact, I don't think I'm doing a great job of
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 selling. I have a few episodes coming out of
00:01:17 --> 00:01:22 the Streamline Solopreneur where I will be selling,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:25 not more aggressively, I'll just be letting my
00:01:25 --> 00:01:29 audience know that I can help them in a way that
00:01:29 --> 00:01:34 is better than the way I have been doing it.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:41 So what will always work from a future of podcasting
00:01:41 --> 00:01:43 standpoint? Have a mission statement, right?
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 Always know I said this in a previous episode,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 right? I think it was episode 20 if I'm looking
00:01:50 --> 00:01:54 at my chart correctly. Have a mission statement.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 Know who you serve. Know who you help and how
00:01:56 --> 00:02:01 you help them. That will always be true. Have
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 good audio. It doesn't have to be perfect. It
00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 doesn't even necessarily need to be highly edited.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 I think this is a future of podcasting thing
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 where you don't have to sound like you are in
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 a recording booth. People are going to want authentic,
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 especially as more and more feel inauthentic.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 So have a mission statement, sound decent, know
00:02:27 --> 00:02:30 who you serve. The mission statement should be
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 something like, I help these people with this
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 problem by solution to problem, right? Something
00:02:37 --> 00:02:41 like that. And then every episode should move
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 towards that. When I have forgotten my mission,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:46 that's when I have seen a dip in downloads. And
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 this happens to everybody. You get busy, you
00:02:49 --> 00:02:53 got to record something. And so You start to
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 lose the thread or what I'm experiencing right
00:02:56 --> 00:03:00 now is I'm pivoting and I'm trying to find the
00:03:00 --> 00:03:05 best way to serve my audience it would be helpful
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 for me to Rewrite my mission statement and use
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 that as a guiding light. So that's what will
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 always work having a mission statement being
00:03:14 --> 00:03:19 authentic knowing who you serve and using your
00:03:19 --> 00:03:23 show not necessarily to get big and make a bunch
00:03:23 --> 00:03:28 of ad money, but to help people who have a problem.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:33 When you do that, you can have a successful show,
00:03:33 --> 00:03:37 even if it's not necessarily going to be the
00:03:37 --> 00:03:43 biggest show. Okay, so that's it for this episode
00:03:43 --> 00:03:49 of The Streamlined. If you are enjoying this
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 series, we're quickly coming to an end. I can't
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 believe we're almost at the end of September.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 But if you're enjoying this, subscribe to this
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 show. But check out my other show, The Streamlined
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 Solopreneur. Those are twice weekly. That show
00:04:02 --> 00:04:07 is twice weekly and it is a mix of mindset stuff
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 as well as practical advice. You can listen to
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 that wherever you're listening to this. I guess
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 unless you're listening to this on the Streamlined
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 podcaster website, but I doubt that. Okay, that's
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 it for this episode. Thanks so much for listening
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 and I will see you tomorrow.
